For many years, Fannie Mae lived in Coquille, Oregon, where she owned and operated a small secondhand store called Happy Helpers. While the store sold donated items at affordable prices, it quickly became much more than a thrift store. It became a place of hope.
Whenever tragedy struck—especially when a family lost everything in a house fire—Fannie Mae never hesitated. Clothing, dishes, furniture, blankets, toys... whatever a family needed to begin again, she found a way to help. She believed people deserved dignity during their hardest moments.
From the day Mary Mae was born, the two shared an extraordinary bond. They spent countless hours together, and Mary Mae adored her Granny. More than words ever could, Fannie Mae taught by example. Through her everyday actions, she showed that generosity isn't measured by how much you have, but by how willing you are to share what God has blessed you with.
The community knew her heart.
Today, Mary Mae's Corner exists to carry that same spirit forward. Every story, every activity, every lesson about kindness, generosity, faith, and helping others is inspired by the woman who quietly changed countless lives without ever asking for recognition.
People throughout Coquille donated items because they trusted Fannie Mae to make sure those gifts reached families who truly needed them. She even maintained donation drop boxes around town, personally gathering, sorting, and preparing each item with care.
Helping others wasn't something she did occasionally. It was simply who she was.
Fannie Mae's store may no longer be open, but her legacy lives on.
